What Does the Research Say?
In a study by the universities of Plymouth and Exeter with the National Marine Aquarium, participants’ heart rate and blood pressure fell in front of an aquarium. Most of the effect appeared within the first five minutes, and as fish were added people watched for longer and reported better mood. The authors note this supports aquariums in waiting rooms.

Hygiene and Cleaning
The aquarium is lidded so no splashing or evaporation reaches the room. Outer surfaces can be wiped with the clinic’s own cleaning products, all equipment sits in a closed cabinet, water changes use a drain away from sterile areas, and regular care keeps it odour-free.
Which Livestock?
We choose calm, colourful, hardy fish that swim in shoals. Aggressive species, species that hide all day and those needing special care are not suitable. Many small fish hold attention for longer, as the research also found.
Care
Clinics have nobody to do water changes between visits, so we recommend weekly care, outside opening hours or at the quietest time. If you like, we send a short report with readings and photos after each visit, which can serve as a record for inspections.
